As an avid biker (whether you are just starting out or have been on the road for a long time) you know that your riding attire is just as much a part of your gear as your bike itself. You rarely think about biking any distance without also thinking about your motorcycle jacket. There’s no question that with your motorcycle jacket style is important. But while it’s important to look good and be comfortable on your bike, the primary purpose of your motorcycle jacket is protection. Your motorcycle attire is essentially another layer of skin that provides a cushion should you ever lay your bike down. A crash is only one type of protection that your attire provides. In a car you are encapsulated by windows and a roof, on a motorcycle, you are in direct contact with high winds and flying debris. Even if your bike has a windscreen, you can still feel the wind and be hit by bugs or other unexpected flying objects. Aside from the added protection, you can get the right jacket to provide optimal comfort for riding in any kind of weather. Motorcycle jackets are designed to let you add or remove layers depending on the temperature. In fact, some motorcycle jackets come equipped with heating elements for when the temperature really drops. They also have specialized lining for additional padding that can be removed when it gets too hot. For your motorcycle jacket you can choose between a fabric and a leather jacket. Textile jackets use a soft cloth or mesh fabric that is light weight and can accommodate padded inserts and even a hoodie. Leather jackets have features that are similar to the fabric jackets. These jackets are vented to prevent you from becoming overheated while riding in warm weather. Still, temperatures can change rapidly and during an extended ride and you can close off the vents when you need. Because storage space is limited on a motorcycle you don’t always have the luxury of carrying items that you might need on a long trip. This is why leather jackets have multiple zippered pockets for carrying various motorcycle accessories and items such as your wallet, sun glasses, and cell phone. In comparison, leather motorcycle jackets are more costly than textile. However, with safety being a major factor, they are more durable. With proper care and weather proofing, your leather jacket is more resilient to extreme weather conditions and frequent use. Naturally you spent a lot of time researching and learning about bikes before buying yours. You want to devote similar attention to purchasing your motorcycle jacket and leather chaps. Your comfort, protection, and safety out on the road are paramount and can only be assured by investing in the proper attire.
